Andrew Gillum's meteoric rise to power is about to get super-sized with former Democratic presidential front-runner and secretary of state Hillary Clinton announcing she'll campaign for him this month.
Gillum the 39-year-old wunderkind democratic candidate has sparked an interest in Florida voters not seen in years. A progressive candidate — endorsed by Bernie Sanders — Gillum began his political career when he was elected commissioner of Tallahassee at the age of 23.
Gillum joins Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (who's running for congress in NY) and other rising stars of the party that are younger, browner, and more progressive than many of the stalwarts of the party like Nancy Pelosi or Chuck Schumer. All were endorsed by Sanders early on and speak to the lasting legacy he made running against Clinton for the 2016 presidential nomination that many said would leave the party in disarray. Sanders endorses all these candidates on the "Our Revolution, Our candidates" site.
As recently as yesterday local news outlets have noted Gillum's popularity surging and appeal in less than likely places that in the last election had swung significantly for Trump.
