The world knows Selena, the classic film biopic starring JLo, but Selena Quintanilla’s life is now coming to the small screen. Netflix announced today that viewers can expect Selena: The Series.
Selena was a singer, songwriter, model, actress, and fashion designer who became one of the most beloved Mexican-American entertainers of the late 20th century, bridging the gap between her Mexican heritage and Texan upbringing. The superstar continues to inspire fans and artists like Cardi B (the rapper calls herself the “trap Selena” in 2017 hit “Motor Sport”) more than 20 years after her death.
The Quintanilla family are developing the series and serving as executive producers. The family has been especially protective of Selena’s image, particularly around the singer’s death.
THR reports that Moisés Zamora (Star, American Crime) is writing the script and will serve as an Executive Producer with Jaime Davila of Campanario Entertainment.
“Selena’s career achievements are legendary, but our scripted series will focus on the incredible story of a Mexican-American family and how an extraordinary young woman transcended categories and borders to become a global star. I can’t imagine a better partner than Netflix to celebrate Selena and her family's lives," Davila told THR.
While the project is just announced with many details still being confirmed, aficionados are eager to find out who will embody the late Tejano music legend.
Considering what the movie opportunity did for Jennifer Lopez, imaginably for many Latinas, this would the role of dreams.
Who do you think could fill Selena’s music-loving shoes?
